The goal is to create a gentle slope between the warehouse floor and the truck bed, making it easy for forklifts, pallet jacks, and other material handling equipment to move goods on and off the truck.

Mechanical dock levelers operate in a somewhat different but equally effective manner. The operator pulls a release lever, which allows the stored energy in the springs or counterweights to lift the platform. To adjust the tilt, the operator may use a handle or lever to manually control the platforms angle.

Safety Features

Modern dock levelers are equipped with various safety features to protect workers and prevent accidents. Lip extensions are common on many levelers. These are hinged sections at the front of the platform that can be extended to overlap the truck bed, creating a secure connection and preventing gaps that could cause forklifts to tip over.

Overload protection systems are also in place to prevent the leveler from being overloaded beyond its capacity. If the weight on the platform exceeds the specified limit, the system will automatically stop the leveler from functioning or trigger an alarm to alert the operator.
